PEOPLE POWER: NEW PEDESTRIAN CROSSING FOR GONVILLE
At Monday’s council meeting, Mayor Michael Laws congratulated Gonville resident and petition organiser, Ms Noeline Lane, “for making a difference and demonstrating people power in action”.
The Gonville resident brought road safety concerns about Abbot Street, between the Gonville Community Centre and the Gonville shopping centre, to council. She had initiated a petition seeking a pedestrian crossing and improved roading markings.
Ms Lane told this week’s council meeting that Abbot Street is very dangerous for pedestrians to cross.
The council’s roading engineers agreed with her and recommended to the council that a pedestrian crossing together with a traffic island and compulsory stop restrictions on the junction of Harper Street and Abbot Street be installed.
The implementation of works will commence immediately and Noeline Lane will assist the mayor in officially opening the new pedestrian crossing.
The council resolved:
THAT the petitioner be thanked
AND THAT the Council approves the pedestrian crossing installation
AND FURTHER THAT a traffic island together with compulsory stop restrictions are approved on the junction of Harper Street and Abbot Street
AND FURTHER THAT the Council proceeds with the implementation of works immediately
AND FURTHER THAT petition organiser Noeline Lane officially assists Mayor Laws to open the pedestrian crossing.
